As we wrap up 100 days of road tripping north from Melbourne, Victoria, to Cooktown, Queensland, we’re reminiscing about all the experiences and all the places we’ve stayed. As I wrote the latest edition of our newsletter ~ Thru the Garden Gate ~ I found myself smiling at the fabulous AirBnBs we’ve stayed in. Of course, the actual accommodation is really only part of the experience. It’s also the location and the people who make it wonderful.

These are a couple of my favourites:

“Critters” at Gleniffer, NSW.

This little cabin is secluded from the main house, a tiny oasis in a rainforest. The kitchen has the most basic of basics, but the bed is gorgeously comfortable, and the bathroom is spacious and includes a washing machine.

The environment was most compelling. Outside the kitchen door was a nook where you could sit and eat or indulge the swing seat and watch the birds in the rainforest. The hosts are particularly knowledgeable about the breeds which visit ~ we saw both a male and a female Bowerbird ~ and the other animals that frequent the property. The airbnb is located just a few minutes drive from Bellingen, NSW.

“Tropical Joy” at Wongaling Beach, Queensland.

Our one “long stay” was a town house in the Mission Beach area of Tropical North Queensland. Located almost midway between Cairns and Townsville, this townhouse was originally going to be the host’s main home so it was beautifully kitted out.

Two bedrooms, two lots of outdoor seating (front patio and upstairs balcony), air conditioning and fans throughout, with a tiny front yard completely enclosed by tall hedges and parking ‘out back’, this complex of 6 units also came with its own pool.

The host is fabulous, the townhouse is located across the road and down a short pathway to the beach, and the locals are super friendly!

An early morning walk on Hyams Beach https://thruthegardengate.com/2023/06/25/an-early-morning-walk-on-hyams-beach/ Sun, 25 Jun 2023 02:29:00 +0000 https://thruthegardengate.com/?p=680

A pre-dawn trip to the beach, before a long day of driving…..turned out to be well worthwhile.

Heading down to the beach, the sunrise looks like it is going to develop nicely.

The local fishermen were there well before me, and seemed to be having quite some success.

Dinner this week for them – Australian Salmon.

Looking away from the sunrise, the night is receding.

A seagull looking for an early morning snack.

And for the really keen, a early morning swim.

and the sunrise develops.

and more…

and finally arrives.

Time to get on with the day.

Humpbacks Going North https://thruthegardengate.com/2023/06/20/humpbacks-going-north/ Mon, 19 Jun 2023 23:22:50 +0000 https://thruthegardengate.com/?p=693

Each year between May and November, thousands of humpback whales travel from the antarctic waters up the eastern Australian coast to breed in the warm waters off Queensland.  And then they head south again, this time with the babies.

So in June when we were at Crescent Head NSW the “Humpback Highway” was in full swing.  Some times from 50 metres high on the headland you could see maybe 3-4 different pods, each containing 3 or 4 humpbacks slowly making their way north.  Sometimes only 500 metres off the shore.

These shots were taken from the drone about 1 km offshore.

What was extra special was noticing the dolphin that was playing with the whales as they travelled.  It looked for all the world to me like a excited puppy getting to play with the big dogs.

This was very special.

Winton, Queensland ~ Home of Waltzing Matilda and Dinosaurs! https://thruthegardengate.com/2023/05/29/winton-queensland-home-of-waltzing-matilda-and-dinosaurs/ Mon, 29 May 2023 00:32:21 +0000 https://thruthegardengate.com/?p=655 What a fabulous experience we’ve had, over the last 3 days!

We’ve learned about Dinosaurs in Australia and witnessed people working on fossils from 95 million years ago. We’ve indulged in fabulous dinners at the Australian Hotel accompanied by favourite Aussie Rock Songs from ‘back in the day’. We’ve explored this little town and checked out all the tourist attractions (except for the Opal stuff) ~ David had a fun time at the Musical Fence and did an impromptu ‘concert’ on the drums!

We loved, loved, LOVED the opportunity to Indulge Sunset ~ in 3 different locations! And, we loved seeing brolgas and bustards and lots of kangaroos and birds, in their natural environments.

Huge thanks to Boulder Opal Motor Inn for our stay. It feels like home, right now! Fabulous to meet Lovely Annette!

So, the ‘head’s up’ scoop about the town:
– the Australian Age of Dinosaurs is expensive but worth the investment; do the 3 tours and sit for a while in the cafe space … the outback is really quiet.

– if you want to know about Waltzing Matilda, check out the fabulous display in the Waltzing Matilda Centre … and grab a coffee at the Tuckerbox Cafe (really nice people and lovely environment).

– Do allow yourself a little bit of time to “play” at the Musical Fence attraction! It’s quirky and a lot of fun (especially when you watch your husband play ALL the instruments!).

Arno’s Wall is a must see: a long fence made of stones and old pieces of machinery ~ my description won’t do it justice, you need to see it for yourself.

– We’ve checked out a bunch of cafes: the Bakery is fabulous and simple (as is the way with country bakeries), but not open on Sundays; the Lost Poet Cafe is a gorgeous space to sit and read or have coffee inside, not overly fabulous food; the Musical Fence Cafe … I don’t recommend at all (unless you are in need of breakfast and a space to work and are a bit desperate); Tuckerbox Cafe is great!

– Go for a drive out to Bladensburg National Park: wow, just wow! We saw kangaroos (grey and red, which surprised us); amazing landscape; had discussions about what the area would be like in flood (there are flood warning signs everywhere); spent a lot of time In Awe of just how incredible the outback is.

– Watch the sunset from a variety of locations: the WINTON sign, on the road to Longreach; the WINTON WAY OUT WEST sign, on the ‘other side’ of town; and drive out to the lookout on the road to the Australian Age of Dinosaurs ~ AMAZING!

Thanks for having us, Winton!

Yungaburra Platypus https://thruthegardengate.com/2023/05/25/yungaburra-platypus/ Wed, 24 May 2023 23:10:14 +0000 https://thruthegardengate.com/?p=687

Yungaburra on the Atherton Tablelands in Queensland is known for a good population of Platypus not far out of town.  It took 3 trips and an early morning start to finally catch a glimpse of one of these elusive creatures.

He looks so happy.

Sunsets & Sunrises in Cooktown https://thruthegardengate.com/2023/05/23/sunsets-sunrises-in-cooktown/ Tue, 23 May 2023 06:58:48 +0000 https://thruthegardengate.com/?p=647

Cooktown and the Endeavour River are blessed with some great vantage points and lots of sunshine – just right for sunset and sunrise images.

You get used to the warning signs of all of the things that might kill you in this part of the world, but this was new, deadly mangos!

Tully Gorge, Queensland https://thruthegardengate.com/2023/05/07/tully-gorge-queensland/ Sun, 07 May 2023 22:30:01 +0000 https://thruthegardengate.com/?p=629 One of the reasons we chose to head in the direction of North Queensland, on our current road trip, was the opportunity to do a bunch of self-guided tourist drives. Between Townsville and Cairns there are a LOT of drives and a lot of things you can explore. I have to confess: even though we’ve been in Wongaling Beach for 2 weeks, we’ve only done ONE of those drives!

This is the guide we found that offers a LOT of fabulous self-guided drives in this area: Great Tropical Drive PDF.

We decided to do a ‘short’ tourist drive: Mission Beach to Tully and back again (route #10 if you look at the pdf), focusing especially on Tully Gorge.

Like most of this area, the foliage is lush, the clouds are low on the mountain tops, and the scenery is stunning. The Tully River is filled with rapids and interesting rock formations, and winds its way through breathtaking canyons.

There are some great scenic lookouts but there is also a LOT of bush and trees that block views. Tully Gorge Road ends at a hydroelectric power station, so the drive is one way in and one way out. Definitely worth a look, though!

By the way, did you know that the Kareeya Hydroelectric Power Station has the capacity to generate enough renewable energy to power 70 000 homes – a year?! Mind-blowing how a river can be beautiful and incredibly useful at the same time.

A Serendipitous Encounter with a Cassowary or Two. https://thruthegardengate.com/2023/05/01/an-serendipitous-encounter-with-a-cassowary-or-two/ Mon, 01 May 2023 07:11:53 +0000 https://thruthegardengate.com/?p=614

As we were driving into Wongaling Beach, about 100 kms south of Cairns, it became very apparent that there were Cassowaries about….the warning signs were large and numerous.

Cassowary are large flightless birds (like an Ostrich or an Emu) that are found in just 3 places in Australia (and some in New Guinea), one of which was in this area. In Australia there are only about 4,000 birds left in the wild.

So naturally, seeing a Cassowary was on the list of things to do in Wongaling Beach.  I was thinking, we would need to do some early morning drives  or maybe some long hikes through the rainforest.

And of course, towards the end of the first week, serendipity delivered.

It was about 9am, we were headed off to find some waterfalls, driving through some of the winding rainforest roads not far from home, and there they were, a male and chick (about 6 months old).  They were fossicking about on the road, largely unconcerned about us or the other traffic that had stopped.

And after a bit, he decided to come even closer, just a little too close for comfort, after all, he had very strong sharp claws and a nasty looking helmet (called a casque) on the top of his head.

But just as I was wondering if it was time to quietly retreat to the car, he and the chick walked right in front of the car, glared at me like he was bored with the conversation,  and turned into the rainforest and disappeared.

Bucket list item achieved.

Bucket list item – achieved.

Getting up early and getting down to the beach is usually rewarding.  Especially on this day.

A Brunswick Heads Sunset https://thruthegardengate.com/2023/04/17/a-brunswick-heads-sunset/ Sun, 16 Apr 2023 23:26:53 +0000 https://thruthegardengate.com/?p=570

We were only there overnight.  Brunswick Heads in northern New South Wales is slightly less well known, and definitely less peopled  than its famous neighbour Bryon Bay.

These from a evening walk at sunset.
